Writing & Illustration

Growing up, I loved books and comics but rarely saw Deaf characters represented. This absence continues to inspire my work. I create stories with authentic Deaf protagonists, placing Deaf children at the centre of adventures, fantasy and emotionally rich narratives. Through my writing and illustration, I aim to increase visibility and representation within children’s publishing while creating stories that all children can enjoy.

Current & Ongoing Projects

Connor: Deaf Secret Agent – The Collar Conspiracy
The first book in a planned children’s fiction series, following a Deaf secret agent on a high-stakes adventure. The project has been in development for several years and is now moving toward professional publication.

The Tales of Victor – The Misfits Creator
A poetic theatre project written in script form and currently being shaped into a children’s poetry book, exploring creativity, difference and belonging.

The Gingerbread Witch
Originally a children’s book, later adapted into an animated short and live theatre production. The animation won 16 international awards for Best Animation, and the story continues to reach audiences through performance and education settings.

Illustration & Visual Storytelling

Illustration plays a central role in my creative practice. I illustrate children’s books, character designs and visual narratives, working both independently and on commission. I have collaborated with a range of writers, helping to bring their stories to life through expressive characters and visual world-building.

In recent years, I have developed my own illustrated series, The Monster Chronicles — darker, atmospheric children’s stories inspired by classic Hammer Horror films and the visual style of Tim Burton. The series follows a young Deaf boy who battles strange monsters to save his twin sister, offering Deaf children strong, relatable heroes within imaginative worlds.

Across all my work, my aim is simple: to create visually rich, inclusive stories where Deaf children can see themselves as heroes, adventurers and creators.

Scope Campageign: Let's Play Fair

The ‘Let’s Play Fair’ campaign created by Scope, the equality for disabled people’s charity. Commissioned me to create and illustrate a ‘dream playground’ to use in their campaign to educate the government, schools and the general public about the importance of children’s play parks being accessible to all. This was an enjoyable project and I was very proud of the outcome - and the volume of people my work will reach.

On the 13th to 25th November 2023 I had an exhibition of my work at Art Center Washington 2023.

In 2012 I worked collaboratively with Julia Donaldson on an exhibition at The Seven Stories Children’s Book Centre. Alongside her work of The Gruffalo, I was asked to create a collection of British Sign Language fingerspelling images. I also created a short screen presentation about The Gruffalo in BSL.

On the 3rd - 31st of May 2016 I had an exhibition of my work at Wolverhampton Deaffest. The exhibition is for deaf artists and photographers to exhibit their work in the main gallery at the Light House. The Deaffest is a deaf-led film and artist festival.

The Magical Storytelling Time

Reviews

"At Deaffest 2016 Paul Miller got involved in the Art & Photography exhibition showcasing his animation work. He professionally set up his exhibition, which looked great and was perfect for showcasing his talent as well as encouraging those who are looking to get involved in the animation area. His work is really creative especially with the use of vibrant colours. We hope he can get involved in future Deaffest’s exhibitions and give a talk to the visitors about his work!"
